The numbers
NVIDIA's developer-forum announcement in February 2026 puts the DGX Spark Founders Edition's price at $4,699, up from $3,999. Our single-node on-demand rate at the time of writing is $0.75 per hour. Dividing one by the other gives the number of rented hours that equal the purchase price: about 6,265 hours.
Break-even at different usage
| Usage per month | Rental cost per month | Months to break even |
|---|---|---|
| 20 hours | $15 | about 313 |
| 50 hours | $37.50 | about 125 |
| 100 hours | $75 | about 63 |
| 200 hours | $150 | about 31 |
| 730 hours (always on) | $547.50 | about 8.6 |
What the table leaves out
- Buying also costs electricity, space, networking and your time to set up and maintain the machine.
- A purchase keeps some resale value. Rental has none, but you also carry no risk of a faulty unit or an outdated one.
- Rental prices can change. Use the rent or buy calculator with the current rate.
- Waiting in the queue costs nothing, but you may not always get a machine instantly.
A rule of thumb
If you will use the machine well under a hundred hours a month, renting is the cheaper way for years. If it would run close to all the time and you can host it, buying pays back within a year. Most experimentation, fine-tuning and evaluation work falls in the first group.
